While the most well-known aspect of Red Cross disaster relief takes place on major disasters, the Red Cross responds to over 60,000 disasters each year nationwide. The vast majority of these disasters are single family disasters such as house fires.
Locally, the American Red Cross of Cache County responds to over 15 disasters each year, most of which are house and apartment fires, and we assist over 80 individuals and families. Working closely with local emergency responders, our Disaster Action Teams (DATs) are notified by the local fire departments whenever living units are affected. We are prepared to respond, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.
With the right training and local experience, volunteers from the local area can also apply to serve on disasters nationwide. The Disaster Services Human Resources (DSHR) system deploys local volunteers to serve clients on Disaster Relief Operations across the county each year.
Ongoing efforts continue to recruit and train volunteers, secure resources for shelter, communications equipment and relief supplies. For information on how to volunteer your facility for shelter use, call or e-mail the Chapter Director at (435) 752-1125.
